Visiting Cayman Brac in the Grand Caymans

Posted on:

We have been traveling in one way or another since the day we met. Our first adventures were in a Honda Civic, way back in the early 1990’s where we packed up a tent and all the necessary paraphernalia to leave home base for a week at a time. We even wired up a VCR and Television (not the flat screen type we have today, but the smallest cube one we could find) to play in the passenger side floor space while we drove. Times have changed over the past 30+ years, but our wanderlust has not.

In 1998, we had the opportunity to accompany my parents on a trip to Cayman Brac in the Grand Cayman Islands. They had access to a rental home owned by their friends and were able to go there whenever it was not rented out. You could say this was the precursor to Time Shares and AirBNB’s.

The house was about 50 feet from the ocean and we had it all to ourselves for the entire week. This was the first time I had experienced driving (or at least being a passenger in a vehicle) on the left side of the road. I am not sure I have ever done that again. It was somewhat unnerving, so we stayed at the house a majority of our time there and that was perfectly fine!

The area between the house and the ocean was rocky, black limestone and areas of sandy beach. The limestone had been eroded to form many caves and inlets at the shoreline. Just a few yards on either side of the house were virtually untouched beaches.

Just outside the back porch was a sandy area with a firepit that we enjoyed every evening where we were treated to some of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen.

This trip was such a long time ago and my parents are both gone now. But, I would have to say that this was one of the earliest adventures that firmly planted the seeds of wanderlust in my heart for the rest of my life.

Thanks for Visiting!
