We try to take short trips in LOKI, our 2000 Ford E250 XL van conversion in progress, just as we would long journeys. Although we’re still halfway to being ready for overnight trips in Loki, we’ve made good use of him for grocery runs and date nights.
Groceries
Loki is an extended van, which means he has ample space for any shopping runs we need to make. When we designed the back “garage” area we made it large enough to accommodate items as large as a dorm fridge. Whether it’s cases of soda, tools from Home Depot, or plants from Lowe’s or the local garden center, everything can be transported with easeโand stays out of sight behind the bed.
Date Nights
Shopping and running errands in Loki is enjoyable, but our favorite use for him right now is date nights. These outings often combine shopping with other errands, but they always end with takeout from a local restaurant. We find a place to park where we can watch the chaotic world around us from the comfort of our private van universe. Itโs like a dinner and a movie experience.
For now, at least until the air conditioner is installed, we will be content to enjoy the local view. Observing ordinary life through the windows often brings us a sense of peace. Watching the busy world buzz around us while we remain outside observers is what makes van life truly rewarding.
