Hot Ride Down the Riverwalk in Columbus

This was a very hot day for a ride! We took this last opportunity to get out and ride before the real Dog Days of Summer set in. This would be our last ride for the summer and we did our best to visit and capture images of some of the more remote things on this trail.

We have done this trail many times, as you know from previous posts. However, there are a few spots on the route that we have never stopped long enough to explore or take photos.

Highway Bridges

This bridge is US Route 280 that you would travel on by car when going from Columbus, Georgia to Phenix City, Alabama and back. On this day, there were a few kayakers in the water trying to stay cool under the bridge.

Columbus Convention Center

The Columbus Convention Center is on the riverfront and the trail is more manicured and lush in this area. There is a nice arch that leads into the Convention Center area but it’s always been covered with tree growth so it’s hard to see below. They also have a fountain and statues but we didn’t stop long enough for that on this day.

The “main drag” closest to downtown on this trail can get a bit tricky to navigate on weekends. This was the 4th of July weekend, so we did have to dodge a few fishermen, kids and dog walkers. It was not too bad, though, as I believe most of the smart folks stayed home and out of the heat.

The mural steps at the center point of the trail are always a little busy. Here you can take a zipline across the river and back, schedule a rafting tour, and other various activities. The buildings along the route in this area are historically interesting, as well.

The bridge you see above me is the bridge that takes you to the top of the dam. I am heading to the switch back part of the trail that will take me up and over.

The last place we really wanted to investigate was the tiny cemetery at the north end of the trail. I love cemeteries and this one was pretty interesting. We had to walk the bikes up a dirt trail to get to it, but it was worth it. In all, I would say there are about 15 graves up there.
