An Office to Park the Bus

Posted on:

What would possess a moderately intelligent couple to move from the house in the photo below to the Kountry Kitchen, also below? At the time these photos were taken, we had our “reasons.” However, in hindsight, it is always easier to see what the real goal was.

We had been living in this beautiful house in a very nice neighborhood for a year or so when we started traveling in the RoadTrek to shows to sell our wares. We were renting this house and once we decided that we wanted to go bigger with our mobile living arrangements, we realized that we would need a place to park the larger vehicle.

We had decided to purchase a greyhound bus to convert into our home on wheels and we knew it would not be a good idea to park it on the street outside the house. We also needed a place to manufacture our wares and work on the conversion of the bus, so it was time to move away from this slice of the American Dream and toward our personal dreams instead.

Where we decided to relocate our base of operations was really decided by Scott’s family tradition of Auburn University sporting event attendance over any other factor. We found a place that was closer to Auburn that we could clean out and rent while we worked on the conversion and attended various sporting events at the same time.

The place was cheap to rent, but man it was a mess when we first got there. It had been a diner/bar, complete with pool table for the patrons and was located next door to a local gas station. The parking lot/area was paved and large, which worked out very well for our bus conversion work. We were able to set up our saws and painting operation inside the building which was an added bonus.

As I mentioned, hindsight is always 20/20 or better and looking back on this move it is very clear that we made this move for the reasons listed above, but also more for the very personal inner desire that we both share to travel together on our own personal life adventure.

You will see in upcoming posts how the bus conversion went and some of the places we traveled. We are currently traveling in our second conversion vehicle across the United States 26 years later and still enjoying the ride.
